roanoke.com - Columnists - Blogging in Southwest Virginia: "Tami and Craig Warman
We're Tami and Craig Warman, a couple of BodyPump instructors from Blacksburg, Virginia. BodyPump is a group fitness program offered at several clubs around Roanoke and the New River Valley, and in thousands of clubs around the world. We use our blog to kick around BodyPump releases and music, various fitness topics, and anything else we decide to pontificate about!"

So.. now the Times considers AdverBlogging interesting enough to be included in their blogroll?

brilliant. just bloody brilliant.

roanoke.com - Columnists - Blogging in Southwest Virginia

Ok - not for nothing, but Ive been through a pretty good sampling of these blogs - and I gotta say.. could they get anymore harmless?

Allright now.. who did this?

Oh.. I guess I kinda did...

it looks like I will be able to gain access to the Valley Metro Archives for use on Forgotten-Roanoke.com. Thats big. Also - apparently Bev Fitzpatrick has seen the site, and says "hello." Crap, thats big too.

Considering I have spent a good chunk of my life on Public Transport - I guess it kind of makes sense that eventually I would become involved with the local public transport people (groups, associations.. whatever). I used to ride a bus up in NY, I used to call it the "Black Rocket" - it was a 1950's GM "Fishbowl" which had all windows but the front doors tinted black - and the paint was basically gone - so it looked like pure steel. It rode like hell - the rear seat was raised about 5 inches over the rest of them, and had a back window directly behind it. I swear, there were times you didnt know if you were going to hit the roof on a pothole.

I loved that thing, and it was the only one in the MTA Long Island Bus fleet like it. I have no idea why the windows were all tinted, but no other bus had that.

Anyway - just something I remembered.

Allright

Updates up, go look. Dont be too impressed, I got kinda lazy about it - design wise. This was more of an excercise to get adjusted to my new design software.

I need a break

Im taking time off from Campbell Ave. while I do more research and work on it. Which means more photos. Lots more photos.

So for now Im going to do a random update today, at some point.

Campbell almost has TOO much history. Its like playing chess, trying to figure out which peices should go where without overloading the board is the hardest part.

So Im going to go with something simple. What? Im not telling yet.

4/23/05

well slap my ass and call me a liar

At the end of Campbell II, I stated that I was going to have Part III (revenge of the street) up by Friday.

Whoops. I guess I lied or something.

Ive got to come up with a schedule, simple and easy to keep track of for both me and you.

See, now had it not been for me working mornings, I could probably get more done, but I had to take the month of mornings. I like getting up mornings before anyone, but I dont like the people who "get up with me."

But thats personal, and for another day..

roanoke.com: Southwest Virginia starts here - after 5#more#more#more

Note to the Roanoke Times staff and Editors:

NO ONE CAN READ YOUR DAMN TINY HEADLINES!!!!!!!

You know the ones, the "more news" section, down beneath the Real Estate stuff.

I dont know if you folks have coke bottle lenses in your glasses, but I dont - Im not nearly blind enough. But even with my glasses - I cant read the tiny tiny headlines.

Its annoying.

CHANGE IT

Another piece on the Pope

Now, Im not trying to harp on a theme here. But I have to admit - some of the writing Im seeing since the announcement of the new Pope, its got more soul to it than Ive seen in a long time. It seems as if Pope JPII's death might have sparked a renewal of faith in some people. I know Ive been thinking about it more since, but I had also been having thoughts about it for a few months now.

You know, simple stuff - having a family bible; what ever happened to that rosary I had as a kid... That kinda stuff. But this was an insightful article that - hell, its interesting. I got the link off of http://www.drudgereport.com, so you might have seen it allready.

But it does put things in a new perspective.

Anyway - more to come later, when blogger starts behaving itself.

UPDATE!!!!!!!

NEW UPDATE!! YOU GO NOW!!

I need a nap

cant argue with that

So said The New Pope:
Christianity is not "our" work; it is a Revelation; it is a message that has been consigned to us, and we have no right to reconstruct it as we like or choose.

4/19/05

So much to say, but I dont want to jump the gun

Pope Benedict XVI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So we've got a new pope - a 78 year old ex-Hitler Youth (he didnt have a choice, it was manditory), ex-Nazi Anti-aircraft & Anti-Tank soldier, and a Deserter of the Nazi Army.

Jee - What a bad man he must be. To give up so easily on something you were hijacked into, didnt want to be a part of. Lord, how do we wind up with suck losers. Another quitter.

Yeah, I know I know - he's been with the church since 1947, but hell - what does that prove? He still quit the army.

Yeah - Im being silly. My allergies are making my head thick. I do have lots of well reasoned, rational thoughts about this - and Im really interested in Pope Bennie. I think this might be a good thing.

If not - its not going to be a bad thing - they'll just label him heretic, and boom - time for a new pope.

I need to lay down.. otherwise my head might explode from all the deep thinking.

LILEKS (James) :: The Bleat

LILEKS (James) :: The Bleat: " but it belongs to the here and the now in a way the glowering melted Walker cube doesnt. The Walker is all about breaking tradition, not building a new one; its unmoored to its place and its period and its people. Which for some is an absolute plus, I suppose. "

Boy - I could say that about the Art Museum and Solar Reflector

4/18/05

We are not the only ones going through it

James Lileks: Take the new Walker -- please!

Apparently, Minneapolis is having its own problem with a Solar Reflector disguising itself as an ugly art museum.

Oh - and on a personal note, IM IRKED at the Times for not including ONE quote by me on the story about the reaction to the art museum.

"I think its crap" makes it, but "The Art Museum And Solar Reflector of Southwestern Virginia" doesnt???

*shakes fist*

More after work...

Boy am I tired.

Yep.. excitement personafied is here once again to brighten your day.

Yeah, anyway.

I got a great picture of the 1930 fire at the Ponce De Leon hotel from the folks over at http://www.roanokefirefighters.blogspot.com/. I will have it up on the site later this week after I resize it, and see about correcting the color (well b&w, but you know what I mean). Race is on.. Im a Biffle/Robby Gordon guy myself.

Yeah - Im having a mixed emotions day. Im gonna try and get another page together for Forgotten-Roanoke, but Im off Tuesday and Wensday this week - so you can check back, but I probably wont publish it till Tuesday. Of course Ive said that before and done it an hour later, so view at your own risk.

Im still looking for feedback on the site - layout and such. Ideas welcome for anything. Also if anyone has a lead on some piece of history thats still around, my ears are open.

Thats all for now.. TTFN

Oh - and dont forget.. I have a comments link on here - feel free to use it.

Roanoke Firefighters

Roanoke Firefighters

Got an e-mail from a nice guy who is doing his best to record the history of roanoke's firefighters and ems workers. A worthy cause if I ever heard of one. Check out his blog, and keep an eye on it - its a bit more concise than having to hunt through the Roanoke Times every day to read on the citys real heroes.

And I dont mean the twits behind the Art Museum and Solar Reflector.

roanoke.com Travel (travel where?) (+1 update)

roanoke.com's alleged history site. History@Roanoke.com, as they call it, hasnt been updated in nearly a year.

Yesss, time for me to bitch off about this one. Irks me to all hell. Im always doing research for the site, and I come across this series of pages often. Great photos, but damnit to all hell, not one shred of information.

Example:Downtown Lookup These pics are from 1997, and as nice as they are - how much has the city changed since 97? And there is no information in the "blurb" written to accompany the pics.

Just this: Address, title, general architectural description. Yanno what, this is not This old House, so try again. And I will quote - "124 East Campbell Ave. Twists and Turns This three-story commercial building was constructed in 1900 during the Romantic Revival Period. The modillioned and dentilled cornice includes a wide frieze board supported by brick pilasters with a narrow Ionic capital." Accompanyed by a picture of the building as a whole, rather than the small peice of building your supposed to identify it by.

Who writes this stuff?

This is the kind of thinking thats getting us the Roanoke Art Museum and Solar Reflector. Oh - and just a side note about that. Anyone with a Stainless Steel sink will tell you - Stainless Steel Stains.

The more I read these descriptions of the buildings, the more I think they were written by someone who has never been to Roanoke. Or maybe was here once.

Well - at least I let you know Im releasing pictures into the wild unfiltered. And I can promise you - at some point, each picture will have an explination with it. And it will appear on a page, as part of a whole story.

Boy - its not THAT difficult is it? Then again, it is the Roanoke Times.

If I may direct your attention to Mr. Myatt

roanoke.com - Weather Stories -Spring is about to take a break

I cant stop reading his colums. In NY, we had much advance warning on weather. Very very rarely did something happen that was unexpected. And once you were in a pattern, you stayed in that pattern. Which meant a week of rain, a week of sun, a month of heat and humidity with no cooling.. Basically dull.

Roanoke, being where its situated, doesnt have that problem. You'll have a land-based hurricane raging at us from the west - and when it gets here - we have wind. Maybe a shower. Its kinda fascinating in a geeky way. Ive always been a weather nut, having taken a few classes in umm.. k.. cul.. callage? ;) Back in NY we had weathermen who would eat Mark LaMarr and Robin Reed for lunch. These guys were intense. One used to yell a greeting at the beginning of every forecast. And I mean YELL. "HelllOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Trenton!"

Yeesh

Then we had the father and son team. Dad was warm and wise, son was hyper and intense.

Kevin Myatt kinda reminds me of them.. he has the brains, he has the interest. I can pratically see him drooling over some violent radar. Kinda guy who would love to be on a barrier island during a Cat. 5 hurricane. With a camera.

Oh Im probably wrong about that - most people arent as nuts as I am. And yes, I would lash myself to a lighthouse and ride out a Cat 5.

Yeah I know.. I could sit in the stands at Wicktory Stadium and ride out a flood...

mtf....

A riddle

What begins at 18th st. SE and runs to 18th St. SW.? Its the object of the next entry on ForgottenRoanoke. Campbell Ave. In Stages.

Episode 1 - the obvious. Downtown. From I-581 west to 2nd St. SW.

But the big question is - which way after that? Stay SW, or go SE?

Oh the drama..... Stay Tuned

Ep. 1 slated for posting by Wensday the latest.
