News from The Roanoke Times -Roanoke considers historic firehouse

On Fire Station #1:

"Grigsby found a newspaper article recently about a city discussion to replace some of the same older stations. The article appeared on Dec. 11, 1963.

'And how long ago was that?' he said. 'I'll stake my job on this,' Grigsby said. 'This will work.'"

Never stake your job on anything, always a bad move. Especially when it comes to public will. Even less of a good idea when private commercial ventures are involved. It is truly not up to the city to decide this one, this rests in the hands of the businesses that are currently served by Station #1, because if they see a decline in response time after the consolidation, the incentive to continue business in downtown Roanoke is less.
